Like a fine cocktail, when it comes to design, one must understand their components. One of my best friends, she is a Long Island Iced Tea; she loves all colors, styles, she's fun and outgoing and can go from zero to sixty in a hot second. She is a trend train wreck, but she makes it work. I liken myself more to a classic gin martini. Standard. Tried and true. Dependable. But that doesn't mean I won't spice it up with a jalepeno stuffed olive. My closet houses oxfords and cable knits, riding boots and classic flats, but it doesn't mean that I don't have boldly colored accessories, cardigans, and ballet flats. I consider myself to be about 90% classic style with about 10% trend, where as my dear friend is about 95% trend and 5% classic pieces.

It helps to know where you stand because then you can build and structure appropriately. This carries from your closet to your decorating style. If you don't know what your decorating style is look at your closet. If you don't know what your clothing style is, look at your home. Love that cable knit sweater that you just can't wait to pull out each fall? Try a cable knit throw blanket or pillow. Do you spend the bulk of your budget on a wildly patterned sofa or a classic sofa with some bold pillows that you can change out for next year's hot color.
Once you have defined your approach to style you will feel more confident designing and making purchases.
