For those who feel like they lack the artistic eye in combining colors a simple cheat to following this rule is to use the dominant color on the walls, the secondary color on the furniture, and the accent color in throw pillows. This can be used for a basic room.
In this room the dominant color is grey. It covers all of the wall space between the windows. A beige/brown is the secondary color seen in the couch and table, and green is the accent color found in the rug and pillows. This isn't much of an accent "pop" as the primary purpose of this room was to provide a calming environment.
