Thank You Notes

This could be a category unto itself but in this post I will address sending a thank you note after a job interview. In today's world you have two options; handwritten or email. While the handwritten note remains the gold standard for thank you's, in some circumstances an email is acceptable. If you completed a phone interview and all communication up to that point has been via email, a nice cyber thank you is acceptable. Another time an emailed thank you could be the best option is when you know hiring decisions will be made soon. In such a case, a cyber thank you is certainly better than no thank you. However, if you have been called in for a face to face meeting, ask for a business card so you may send a handwritten note. Be sure to send it promptly (1-2 business days) as many positions are highly competitive and there will likely be interviewees after you. Also, if you are interviewing for a position and know it will be weeks before a decision will be made, send a handwritten thank you card regardless. Keep it light and concise, thanking them for the interaction and time, perhaps mentioning something you spoke about {"I found the development of the new patient care sets to be a great way to increase continuity of care!"}. You want to show that you listen, follow up, follow through, respect their time, and it is a nice way to get you back in their thoughts. This is the time to be appreciative; do not use it as an attempt to continue to promote yourself.

Remember that this is  professional interaction. Upgrade from chachagirl123@hotmail that you've used since high school. Refrain from what I call "typing in text." DO NOT use abbreviations (LOL, TTYL, OMG).

Below I have included a guide:

Ms. Clark,

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday afternoon. I very much enjoyed speaking with you about the position and touring your facilities. Please be in touch should you have any more questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Lucy Hall
